Take an excursion to Mombasa an hour and a half drive away for a city experience and explore its Gede Ruins, mosques and it Arabic Old Town. Mida Creek a mangrove abundant with wildlife can be explored by taking a dhow trip. 

For sports and entertainment visit the Vipingo Ridge  club only half an hour away and then go karting African style under palm trees at the Shanuz about an hour away from the retreat.  Alternatively, Nyali’s entertainment complex has a cinema for the latest films and games facilities.

Mamba Village is home to the hungriest crocodiles in east Africa and here you will have a chance to taste crocodile and if that’s not to your taste then why not settle for souvenir shopping from the onsite shop.

The Gambia

The Gambia also known as the smiling coast is a popular year round destination with average daily sunshine ranging between 8-10 hours throughout the year. July, August and September see an average of 6 hours whilst temperatures still stand at 29-31 degrees still very acceptable as a sun holiday.

Temperatures inland can reach as high as 42 degrees whilst the cooling brings reduces it to around 30 degrees. The heaviest rain falls during August through to September with most of the rain falling at night. A light rain mac is advised as well as warm clothing for late nights and early mornings during the winter months.

Getting around in the Gambia is best achieved through taking advantage of the organised travel or taxis which can be found close to many resorts.

If travelling on a Safari, then your holiday arrangements will include transport as required since travelling alone in some areas is not advisable. Some areas offer public bus service routes but these are often overcrowded and do not run to schedule with many unlikely to pass a UK MOT!

Cape Verde

Probably the most popular and most developed of the West Coast, these ten islands have continued to attract visitors who dream of sun in winter and because of its close proximity to the UK and well serviced flights and variety of accommodation, the popularity of this region has grown.

The best time to go is between November and May to avoid the rainy season which brings about the increased activity of mosquitoes. Temperatures range from early 20’s through to early 30’s degrees Celsius with coastal areas experiencing a light breeze, whilst inland can see very humid conditions.

Each of the islands has something unique to offer aside from their spectacular beaches and warm climates. The main islands offer a decent choice of bars and restaurants where you can expect to pay between 20-30 euros per person for a three course meal with wines. In the towns you can indulge in creole dishes and local delicacies often prepared from fresh produce caught that day. The islands play host to a number of festivals and at weekends you can listen to the beat of Verdean music played well into the early hours of the morning.

Accommodation choices range from private villas to international five stars hotels, guest house and small boutique hotels and can accommodate couples, families or groups on self-catering through to all inclusive. The flexibility of board also supports island touring and twin centre holiday to ensure you get a real flavour of the islands culture.

For activities and interests, each of the islands really do come into their own. In addition to topping up your tan you can explore the islands through excursions where you learn of the colourful histories and cultures and see the natural attractions spattered across the islands.

Sal island is renowned for its windsurfing waters a magnet for water sport lovers, so if you want to learn how to windsurf, you are in the perfect location to hire equipment, have lessons and organise trips. Brightly coloured sails dotted about the ocean is a common sight with kite surfing, diving and deep-sea fishing available.

Boa Vista offers humpback whale watching between June to August as they gather in the islet of Sai Rei for feeding. Also spot turtles nesting between June and September.

Sao Vicente the greenest of the islands is a superb location for hiking, and walking with its rugged mountains and biking, easily reached by an hours ferry crossing or by four-wheel drive.

Sao Nicolau is undeveloped and its natural appearance of rugged mountains which hosts the endangered dragon tree attracts bird watchers. For views across the vista why not take a horseback ride high into the mountains and overlook brightly painted colonial styled houses which decorate the quiet valley. If water is more your scene then here sport fishing will see you catch Blue Marlin available in abundance.

The remaining islands are less developed but still boast beautiful sand beaches and warm waters and a slim spattering of bars restaurants and accommodation with access mainly by ferries although an inter-island air service is available.
